Emissions: A Climate Comedy uses live music and physical comedy to shed light on human nature and our warming planet
ShipBrecht Productions presents Emissions: A Climate Comedy
Written by Ann Cavlovic | Directed by Tracey Guptill
Opening 'Night': June 22nd, 2pm | June 22 – June 28, 2013
Emissions: A Climate Comedy, a new play by Ottawa author Ann Cavlovic, will bring a fresh and satirical take on the issue of climate change to the Ottawa Fringe Festival, June 22 – 29, 2013.
In each scene, a modern Adam or Eve deal with anything from international negotiations to a dirty microwave, exploring what it is that makes human beings piss in our own swimming pool. But can they reconcile their own differences in end? The show blends clever dialogue with physical comedy and live music led by Scott Irving of the Peptides.
Ann Cavlovic wrote this play after an environmental activist called her "immoral" for buying a car. "There's a seed of truth in that nasty accusation," says Cavlovic. "Those fossil fuel emissions will harm my child's generation the most. Yet I can't single-handedly save the planet. But does that mean I give up? Or make even more personal sacrifice, when others around me won't? Or does it mean more political pressure for collective solutions, like better public transit? Or is that just a cop-out?"
"I was drawn to the refreshing perspective of Emissions," says director Tracey Guptill. "The humour echoes Shel Silverstein, it verges on the ridiculous but is always clever. The cast is hilarious; I couldn’t ask for a better group to work with."
The cast of 8 brings a wealth of experience in social theatre and physical comedy, including Drew Moore (Third Wall Theatre), William Beddoe (producer of the first Ottawa Fringe Festival), and Scott Irving of the PepTides.
